FAQs

Why is coaching different than reading?

Coaching provides a customized approach, whereas reading offers general information.

Professionals interested in coaching want the fast track. As a result, they are typically exhausted from generic information that sounds good initially but doesn’t practically work.

Coaching offers you the ability to learn at your pace. We’re talking about your challenges. We’re positioning you to be the more effective every day.

What does access to you really mean?

It’s as simple as pay-to-play. This level of coaching is similar to guardrails.

With a discussion once a week, you’re not going to be an expert in 3 months. However, what this access affords you is running those challenging and complex situations by an expert. Here are several questions that surfaced from leaders I have coached:

  • How do I build adoption for this idea?
  • How do I carve out my space as a BRM?
  • Where do I start to evaluate business unit BRM maturity?
  • As a leader of other BRMs, how do I qualify value realized?
  • My company has adopted agile practices, e.g., SAFe or Scrum. Where does the BRM fit?
  • How are the BRM roles and responsibilities defined to operate in a Scaled Agile environment?
  • I’m new to the organization. How do BRMs operate?
  • What’s the best way to clarify my role as a BRM?
  • How do I educate executive leaders about the benefits of the BRM role
  • What is the BRM’s role in innovation?
  • What’s the best approach to evaluating the bench strength of resources in the BRM role today?
  • How do I develop a target operating model to assess the organizational gaps that the BRM will fill and communicate how this approach will integrate into the larger organization?
  • We’re shifting from projects to products. How does my role evolve?
  • I was just hired. How do I make a positive impact?
  • Portfolio directors managing the PMO are already in place; how does my role conflict or complement existing organizational roles?

Candidly, if I’m awake, my phone is on. If I’m asleep, it’s off. So the benefit of this model is you can reach me day or night and not worry about reaching me at a bad time.

When I’m available again—when I wake up—I’ll respond immediately.

The benefit of engaging an expert coach is consistency, accountability, and vision. I have the ability to encourage you to maximize the BRM role in a consistent approach that optimizes your ability to be most effective in the role. As a coach, I help to keep you accountable for what you say and commit to doing. Lastly, when you’re in the thick of it, it isn’t easy to see the broader picture. I ensure you’re making smart and strategic decisions to protect your future.

Why are you credible? Who are you?

I’m a highly respected executive, BRM, and passionate evangelist for the BRM community. As a BRMP®, CBRM®, MBRM®, I am a change champion and fully embrace the role, capability, discipline, and philosophy of the BRM Institute to achieve powerful results.

I also was the first globally credentialed Master of Business Relationship Management (MBRM®) by the BRM Institute. You could say that I set the global standard of what a master BRM is all about. I was the first to demonstrate mastery and the practical application of business relationship management skills for quantified outcomes and value realization.

There are two categories of MBRM®: BRM practitioner and BRM knowledge provider. Both are extremely well respected and require the demonstration of BRM mastery at the highest levels.

  • BRM practitioner: mastery of BRM inside corporations
  • BRM knowledge provider: mastery of BRM concepts outside corporations (training)

I also hold BRM Institute “certificates of experience” in the following areas:

  • Change Management and Transformational Change
  • Organizational Transformation and Scalability
  • Project Management and Portfolio Management
  • Strategy and Strategic Resource Management

I am also a 4x author, MIT Sloan and Yale School of Management speaker, and avid blogger with hundreds of articles on innovation, data science, artificial intelligence, and blockchain. Most recently in January of 2021, I published Leading with Value: How to Effectively Communicate Business Value. This is the go-to book for leaders who are serious about clearly communicating and quantifying business value!

Here is what folks are saying about the book:

“Learn how to speak the language of business value! Leading with Value is the solution that every business relationship partner has been looking for–the complete guide to effectively communicating business value!”
GLENN REMORERAS, CHIEF INFORMATION OFFICER AT MARK ANTHONY GROUP

Leading with Value offers insightful examples of how to capture and communicate value to your business partners. Do your leaders understand your value? Can your peers describe the services you provide? As a CIO and 4x author, Nichol harnesses his experience to empower leaders to maximize business value.”
KRIS SPRAGUE, HEAD OF PROJECT PLANNING & SCHEDULING AT REGENERON PHARMACEUTICALS, INC.

Leading with Value offers CDOs and CIOs concrete ways to capture and communicate the business value of their data, analytics, and technology investments. Nichol makes the case for why traditional budget and PMO measures are outdated and offers more relevant approaches for a rapidly changing digital world. A must-read!”
CINDI HOWSON, CHIEF DATA STRATEGY OFFICER AT THOUGHTSPOT & HOST OF THE DATA CHIEF PODCAST

“We all know that traditional PMOs are broken and don’t provide the value executives expect. Leading with Value is the first book to systematically break down the concept of value into pieces that every leader can take advantage of for their organizations’ benefit. If you want to do a better job of quantifying the impact and value of your team, this book should be your first read!
TRUSHAR SHAH, HEAD OF ENGINEERING AT GEP WORLDWIDE

Why hire a coach? I’m already quite knowledgeable about BRM?

I’ll share a personal experience. I’m a USA Triathlon Certified Coach (USAT) and a nationally certified personal coach. Then you might ask, “why do I meet with a personal coach 3x a week?” I’m already an expert. I could easily build out my annual training plan, write out my daily workouts, and map my nutrition to the calories consumed and burned to achieve my fitness goals.

You’re right. I could absolutely do that. So why do I have a coach?

I have a coach to keep me accountable. These sessions validate that I’m performing the exercises with near-perfect form. In addition, the sessions ensure that I make time to stretch and allow my body to warm up and cool down properly. I have a coach because I know that I have blind spots and that health is won as a long game.

The top athletes have trainers. The top business leaders have coaches. Who’s coaching you?

What type of role benefits the most from coaching?

Roles that benefit the most are embedded within dynamic organizational environments. For example, the environment might be new because of a new role, new responsibilities, new team, or new promotion.

When the environment changes, the expectations for your role also change. Therefore, it’s vital to understand how those changes in expectations, affect your daily interactions.

Coaching offers strategies, techniques, and tips to position you for success!

Okay. How do I start?
